Your tile may still look great, but the grout between it can be another story.
Over time, grout can become darker, stained, uneven or simply impossible to get back to its original appearance. At that point, homeowners often start looking at professional grout cleaning and discover another option: grout color sealing.
So what’s the difference, and which one does your grout actually need?
Grout cleaning removes dirt and buildup from the existing grout. Color sealing restores a consistent color while also adding a protective barrier to the grout.
Which service makes sense depends on the condition of your grout and what you’re trying to accomplish.
What Does Professional Grout Cleaning Do?
Grout is porous, which means dirt, spills, oils and other contaminants can work their way into the surface over time.
Regular mopping can actually contribute to the problem. Dirty water can settle into recessed grout lines, gradually leaving them darker even while the tile itself looks clean.
Professional grout cleaning is designed to remove that accumulated dirt and buildup more effectively than normal household cleaning.
Grout cleaning may be all you need if:
- The grout is primarily dirty rather than permanently stained
- The original grout color is still reasonably consistent
- There are no significant areas of permanent discoloration
- You are happy with the original grout color
- The grout is otherwise in good condition
Sometimes homeowners are surprised by how much better a floor looks after the grout is professionally cleaned.
What If Cleaning Doesn’t Restore the Original Color?
This is where the difference between dirty grout and discolored grout becomes important.
Professional cleaning can remove contamination, but it can’t always reverse years of staining, fading or inconsistent coloration.
You might clean the grout thoroughly and still have areas that are lighter, darker or simply different from one another.
That’s not necessarily a cleaning problem anymore.
It may be a good candidate for color sealing.
What Is Grout Color Sealing?
Grout color sealing involves applying a specialized color sealer to the grout lines after they have been properly cleaned and prepared.
The result is a much more consistent grout color along with a protective surface that makes the grout less absorbent and easier to maintain.
Color sealing can be particularly useful when:
- Grout remains discolored after cleaning
- Different areas of the floor no longer match
- Old stains have permanently changed the grout’s appearance
- You want to change the grout color
- You want grout that’s easier to keep clean
- An older tile installation needs a visual refresh without replacement
Can Color Sealing Make Old Grout Look New Again?
It can make a dramatic difference when the grout itself is structurally sound.
One of the biggest advantages is consistency. Instead of having grout that’s light in one part of the room, dark in another and stained near high-traffic areas, color sealing can create a much more uniform appearance.
That can change the look of the entire floor because grout lines make up a surprisingly large part of what your eye sees.
Can You Change the Color of Your Grout?
Yes. Color sealing isn’t limited to recreating the grout’s original color.
Homeowners can often choose a different shade to better complement their tile or stone.
For example, very light grout that has been difficult to maintain might be changed to a slightly darker, more forgiving shade. An outdated grout color may also be changed to give an existing tile installation a more current appearance.
That can provide a noticeable update without tearing out perfectly good tile.
Does Color Sealing Mean You Never Have to Clean the Grout?
No. Color-sealed grout still needs normal cleaning.
The difference is that the protective barrier makes the grout less porous, so spills and dirt are less likely to penetrate as easily into the grout itself.
Color sealing makes grout easier to maintain. It doesn’t make it maintenance-free.
Should Grout Be Cleaned Before Color Sealing?
Yes.
Color sealer shouldn’t simply be applied over dirty grout. The grout needs to be properly cleaned and prepared so the color sealer can bond correctly and produce a consistent result.
This is another reason professional evaluation matters. Cleaning isn’t necessarily an alternative to color sealing. It can be an important first step in the color-sealing process.
What About Cracked or Missing Grout?
Color sealing is primarily an appearance and protection treatment. It isn’t a substitute for repairing damaged grout.
If grout is cracked, loose or missing, those problems need to be evaluated and addressed appropriately before color sealing.
Likewise, recurring grout cracks may indicate movement in the tile installation. Simply covering them won’t correct the underlying cause.
Grout Cleaning or Color Sealing: Which One Do You Need?
A simple way to think about it is this:
If your grout is dirty, start with cleaning.
If your grout is clean but still stained, discolored or inconsistent, color sealing may be the better solution.
And if you want to change the grout color or make it less absorbent and easier to maintain, color sealing may make sense even when the grout can be cleaned successfully.
